SI #7

Broken records play the same song over and over, unable to play a different song. To play a twist on this concept, I used it to represent being controlled. I decided to get into a box so that I could have a reference photo to draw myself in a vinyl player. Then, I used alcohol markers to shade my self portrait in black and white - to match the colors of a record. I went over some details in color pencil to accentuate the sharp edges of shadows. For the background, I wrote the lyrics to “Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want” by the Smiths. This is to show my pleas to be let out of the vinyl player, being let out of being controlled. However, I’m trapped and all I can do is hopelessly beg for the ability to fulfill my wants. The repetitiveness of the broken record’s playing also portrays how when one is controlled, they only follow the will of other people over and over.
