SI #8

In loss, there is always something to be found. This piece illustrates how at the end of many failed attempts to find an identity - such as trying on multiple personas to see which one resonates, there will always be the true self at the end. The ghosts represent the “dead” selves - the people I’ve tried to be. They’re drawn sketchily to show how they’ve never actualized since they’re not who I am. However, out of the chaos and mess of the ghosts, there is a fully rendered me that makes it out. There’s a sparkle on my eye to show the realization of who I am - similar to insight. I used alcohol markers to display a duality - they were first used to create sketchy linework but then used to blend colors to create a realistic self portrait.

Experimentation

Notes 10/17/23

In this piece, I am trying to communicate the emergence of the true identity after previous failed attempts at one.

Artist Research:
Most of my artist research or inspiration is mainly from the medias I consume. A lot of them are psychological shows with very intentional and interesting imagery. This one in particular is inspired off of one of my favorite shows called Neon Genesis Evangelion, which utilizes confusing and interesting imagery to execute a message. The sparkle derives from that except I wanted to put my own personal spin on it by representing the emergence of self

Materials Exploration:
I will be honest, I really don't like painting so I'm going back to materials I have more direct control over rather than depending on the brushstroke. For this one, I am using alcohol markers due to its vibrancy and sharpness. I enjoyed working with alcohol markers for my summer homework primarily due to how sharp it looked.I also wanted to try mark making and texture with pens layered on top of the marker.

Ideation:
I am not sure if it's okay to be going out of order in my portfolio, especially so early into it but for this one rather than focusing on the loss of identity, I'm focusing on the emergence of identity. While planning my portfolio, I also wanted to experiment with world building that went above what we are familiar with. I haven't exactly done it with the last two pieces so for this one, I want to establish a clear world that we are not. For this world, I am on a planet in outer space, and the planet is full of skulls and skeletons (good timing for Halloween). I have a symbolic colorful sparkle out of my eye. The skulls are to represent the failed versions of me that have died due to me not feeling comfortable in it. The sparkle is to represent the colorful identity that exists inside me and I am coming to realize it. I want the sparkle to seem as if it's splitting the page apart and is so overwhelming.

Technical Development:
I'm still trying to learn how to blend the colors together - when I try to blend the lighter color with the shading, it just makes the shading lighter in a way that's unnatural. That might be really bad wording, but it's not seamless blending. I think I might have to go in with transition colors and I want that sharp vibrant look.

Essential Skills:
I want to use mark making, intention, and a bit of POV for this one. I want to use mark making with the pens when I line them over the alcohol marker and I want to use hatching. I like the texture hatching produces. For intention, for my whole portfolio I want to use very intentional imagery. I want there to be meaning behind every subject used in my piece and contribute to the overall meaning. Like for example, the skulls, world building, and sparkle are all intentional devices for the message. For POV, I'm considering a somewhat overhead perspective in order to emphasize that sparkle and the shock.
