What idea is guiding this work?
For this project, I wanted to explore the Frutiger Aero aesthetic of the 90s-2000s. It was heavily used in UI in technology for that era - trying to connect nature to technology as way to illusion consumers into the comfort of technology. It was characterized by optimism for the future, often quoted “The future we were promised”. However the aesthetic was ended by favor for corporate and flat aesthetics. This connects to my SI because I wanted to demonstrate the idea of a person being illusioned by the comfort of the internet, being distracted by the harsh reality of what lies on the internet.
How are you practicing, experimenting or revising aspects of this work? (you can pick one)
I am experimenting with which aspects of early 2000s internet and/or Frutiger Aero to incorporate into my piece. For example, for my first thumbnail I incorporated the old style textboxes and applications, bubbles, vibrancy, etc. from the aesthetic and tried contrasting it with the idea of drowning into the real world(dark water depths, etc.) I wanted to experiment with the person’s composition by putting her into a compelling pose - swimming out of the textbox only to be met by drowning of the real world. For my other thumbnail, I thought it would be interesting to trap the person into an aqua mouse and then contrast that saccharine-ness by placing the mouse onto a desk decorated with the corporate, flat style or by AI art applications.
How can your choices of materials or processes relate to your idea?
I will be attempting photoshop / adobe illustrator because I want to recreate the smoothness and the skeuomorphism of the Frutiger Aero aesthetic. Those applications are more frequently used in UI design rather than Procreate, which I commonly use - so I wanted to use them in order to really get a feel of how UI designers design their interfaces. This process would help me be more aligned with my idea since it has a focus in using design to draw viewers in - particularly through the internet. This would help me make the idea of this piece more nuanced
